The Continental Gator Hardshell 700c Road Tire has long been a favorite of riders looking for a durable tire that preserves ride quality, and now Continental has added even more flat protection.

Three types of anti-flat breakers are used, starting with a bead to bead top layer of Duraskin polyamide fabric to protect the casing against cuts, punctures and abrasions. The next layer is the deeper Hardshell core which is a super-tough layer that extends into the sidewall without tacking on too much weight or sacrificing suppleness. Finally, the PolyX breaker further wards off flats directly under the tread using tightly woven polyester fibers often used in automobile tires that also preserve ride quality.

700c sizes (622 ISO). (32 mm width available here.)

Note: Continental has added wear indicators to all Gator Hardshell tires. These small divots in the tread surface are intentional and are not a sign of a factory defect. Once the rubber wears to the point where the divots are no longer discernible, you'll know it's time to replace.

Dare I say... no flats?

These are durable, tougher-than-tough tires! I commute pretty carelessly over some really sketchy surfaces strewn with broken glass, gravel, bits of metal, the whole nine yards... and I have yet to get a flat with these tires after many months. That said, I hate these tires in the rain! They feel slippery and I don't have much confidence through the corners when the roads are wet. I plan to take them off and replace them with something grippier when it starts raining in the fall... but you can bet the Gator Hardshells will be back on my bike come spring.

Summer 2014 edit: I never got around to taking these tires off last winter. I got used to taking the corners a bit more carefully and the tires didn't give me too much trouble even in heavy rain. Still going strong now! I recommend these tires all the time to anyone who's sick of flats. Awesome.

I like these tires - I ride a lot of tough roads, wet, sandy, rocky, chip-sealed, roads w cracks and with seasonal thorns, all good with Gatroskins!

Riding on Gator Hardshell tires...

I like to ride on all kind of surfaces without to much worry of puncture. For three riding seasons I have been running the tires on my bike and my wife's bike. We ride three to four times a week and we do a number of centuries each year.

The tires roll well enough that I can easily keep up with many pace-lines. And I continue to build confidence in the tires each time I am passing another rider with a puncture.

I do my best to wear-out a set of tires in one riding season (rotating fore and aft for even wear), to avoiding watching the tires dry-out during our non-riding winter months in Utah. Drying out, cracking and the fraying side-wall-strings are my only complaints - the tires do seem to age quickly.

However, I have no problem buying another set of Gatorskins in the near future.

Best training and robaix tire made

I used these tires in the Rouge Robaix in south Louisiana for 106 miles, partly off road, and then road 5000 miles of training. Best tire made. I had one flat the whole time. A large piece of glass made its way in. Craig Van Valkenburg

Best tires in the world -rarely get flats

I ride double centuries and can't afford to lose time to flats . I see some people on these rides getting multiple flats 5 to eight a ride sometimes . All I can say is I rarely get a flat but avoiding the trash & glass on the road helps . I have ridden close to 4000 miles on these tires without a flat many times .

Long Lived durable tire.

It's not a light tire by any stretch of the imagination, but for me it has been very flat resistant. I use it for winter training rides and commuting..used are ones where I really don't want to flat. The performance of the tire wt conditions is as good as the 4000 s.

Looking for a ride for riding every day and not worrying about flats.

This is a tire that I can count on to give me a worry free ride. Riding the central coast of California, Cayucos to San Luis Obispo and nearby road on find a lot of different road conditions, these tires handle them all.

Good training and rough road tire

Have been riding these a couple of months now on rough country roads (lots of goat heads), through parts of LA (ie. crappy roads), and a century on the central coast without any flats or other problems.

They feel harder than my previous tires, which were Specialized Roubaix Pros, and run them at less pressure than those. The Speci's I ran at 110, and the Conti's at 105. These have less tread than the Roubaix, but I don't feel the difference. However, on downhills along my normal route, my GPS has showed a 2mph gain in speed consistently. Nothing scientific there, but found it interesting as usually ride the downhill with the same perceived effort.

I bought them as they were on sale and read a lot of positive reviews. Been happy with them as well!

Impressed by the complimentary comments, but at what pressure?

I have read a lot of complimentary comments on this site about the Gator Hardshell tires and I am thank full to all. However I noticed to my disappointment that all the comments except one do not mention the performance of the tire as a function of its inflation pressure which is fundamental. A tire which is inflated at its recommended pressure will suffer different behavior against puncture than a tire which is inflated at its maximum, just as a tire at its maximum inflation will ride faster (easier) than one which is inflated at its recommended pressure which is lower. Of course there is a tendency to use the maximum pressure to improve functional performance and thus it would be very useful if posted comments also offer the pressure in their judgement. Thank you.

Very good training tire

I have rotated through a lot of Hardshells and UltraGatorSkins, and get just about the same amount of miles out of each. Not killer for wet conditions and does not corner all that well, but will stand up to glass and debris very well. It can be defeated by radial tire wire and goats heads if they are not spotted and removed. I can usually get between 3-5k miles out of a set. The sidewalls are subject to wear and will look ratty after awhile, but I've not know them to cause any problems. Side punctures have ruined a couple of the tires, but I've gotten home by inserting an emergency plastic patch to the inside of the tire. When you start getting flats its an indication that the tire has had it, also if the cord is showing. Pick these up when they go on sale, your riding buddies will start doing the same...

Better than I remember-great for all rides where you really don't want a flat

Here in Soggy Western Oregon, all-year riders endure many months of cold & wet conditions. Changing a flat on the roadside, when the weather is 40 degrees, and solid rain, is especially bad. This tire sees me through an entire Winter season with minimal or zero flats. Several years ago, used on a narrow rim, the Gator Hardshell seemed to lack traction-I didn't like it much. But now, using it on 24mm wide rims, the traction is quite fine. Have ridden these tires on many gravel roads with no issues, as well. Plus, the rolling resistance is certainly acceptable for a training tire. The combination of durability and performance make this an excellent all-condition training tire. Note that the 25c Gator Hardshell will measure 27 mm in width, when mounted on a wide 24mm rim.

Seems to work fine.

I have used the Gatorskin tires for the past year and thought I would get even more flat protection from the Hardshells. The Hardshells don't seem much heavier than the Gatorskins, at least that I have noticed while riding. They ride well going straight, but I'm not entirely comfortable with their cornering. Then, after only six rides, I was victimized by a goat head. Surprised that I got a flat.

Great tire!

I use this as a training tire, with mileage ranging from 200 - 350week in the southwestern US. Roads have lots of puncture-inducing debris including cactus, glass, sharp rocks, and all manner of metal shrapnel. No flats in two months, which is a record for me. The tire is a bit heavier than the Gatorskin, and while I am still undecided as to whether the extra costweight of the Hardshell is worthwhile (as compared to the Gatorskin) thus far I am very pleased with the tire.

Excellent durability and no flats!

I use the Gator Hardshells on a Cyclo Cross bike I convert for use on the road. I have not had a flat in about 3000 miles even thought the roads here in California are poor.

I did have a sidewall blowout on one tire when I first bought the tires. It was kind of amazing since the labels proudly state Handmade in Germany! The staff at Bike Tires Direct were a pleasure to work with and replaced the tire with no hassle.

Great Performing Tire for Commuting in City

Using the tire for daily commuting tofrom work. I purchased the 28mm so it would be a little softer and hopefully tougher with rough roads and potholes. I think that paid off. These are comfy to ride and feel great. They're not light but I got them hoping that they were tough against puncures and mostly glass. So far they are functioning well after 6-8 con mutes.

thank heavens for gatorskin hardshell

I use hardshell exclusively these days for 1 primary reason, a lot less punctures. Around central MA many of the roads get beaten up with the winter snow and plowing. There's also lots of wood splinters and sharp things on the road. With other tires, I used to get 4-5 punctures each season, which really sucks. It especially sucks on a group ride. Even when I roll over broken glass and the tire gets a nasty cut it's fine. The only time I've had to change hardshell is when the tread wears out. Whereas lighter tires I've had major gashes that destroyed the tire.

Great prices, great service!

I love these tires, they hold up well and resist puncture. I'm glad Continental finally put some thread gauges in a couple locations so you know when it's time to replace, instead of seeing threads!

I think these will be the only tires I will ride on, they're that good.

This Tire Far Exceeded My Expecations

I ride a daily, short loop on some pretty choppy roads here in this old copper mining town in southern Arizona,... to keep my mild arthritic knee healthier. An employee of Bike Tires Direct recommended the Continental Gator Hardshell tire after I described conditions here. I have not had any buyer's remorse at all.

Not long after mounting the 700 C's the front tire picked up 2 of those nasty goat head thorns. After reading reviews here, I had learned to wipe the tires down with a rag, inspecting them after each ride, to prevent any road hazards from embedding into the tire. Well, the tires took the two thorns, side by side on the top tread and I easily removed them with tweezers. Much to my delight, the tires renowned puncture resistance kept the thorns from reaching the Kenda inner tubes, which I also had purchased from BTD. No flat!!

I have now been riding the GatorSkins for 6 months or more, and haven't picked up any more goat head thorns, but I am confident that of I do, these babies (which ride remarkably smooth, BTW) will resist flats.

My Gator Hardhell tires provided excellent protection against punctures and great performance

I commuted 6300 miles last year over rough roads with only three punctures. I normally get 6000 miles out of the front tire and 3000 miles out of the back tire. I have picked up several thorns in the fall, stopped and pulled them out without a puncture. The side wall seems to be the most vulnerable.

Dependable Ride

I have a 16 mile round trip commute through town. 2700 miles in 2013 with only one flat because I went through a road construction area one too many times. My route includes pot holes, small stones & pieces of asphalt, railroad tracks, and plenty of other misc bike lane debris. Temps varied from 13-95 degrees. [$] per tire for this performance is a steal.
