The Gatorskin has long been a favorite of riders looking for a durable tire that preserves ride quality, and now Continental has added even more flat protection with the Gator Hardshell.

Three types of anti-flat breakers are used, starting with a bead-to-bead top layer of Duraskin using a polyamide fabric to protect the casing against cuts, punctures and abrasions. The next layer is the deeper Hardshell core, which is a super-tough layer that extends into the sidewall without tacking on too much weight or sacrificing suppleness. Finally, the PolyX breaker further wards off flats directly under the tread using tightly woven polyester fibers, often used in automobile tires, that also preserve ride quality.

Wire bead. 27" x 1 1/4" (32-630 ISO).

Note: Continental has recently added wear indicators to all Gator Hardshell tires. These small divots in the tread surface are intentional and are not a sign of a factory defect. Once the rubber wears to the point where the divots are no longer discernible, you'll know it's time to replace.

Great tires for a great price.

Use these tires on my cyclocross bike which I use for mostly road riding. So far so good, with no flats or problems. I live in Montana so the road conditions are not always great. the folks at BikeTiresDirect were absolutely great. had some size issues with the original order, that were my fault, and The guys at BTD bent over backwards to help me get it straightened out. free shipping and my items arrived extremely fast.

Great Tires!

knock on wood I haven't had an issue since owning these tires (3 months). I had some wicked old gnarly bike tires. In one month I had FOUR flat tires. Big bummer. A co-woker and fellow bike commuter recommended this tires and I have been super happy with them!!

Great tire in a very tough environment! Have done better than any other tire I've tried.

Let me start by saying that I still like this tire and that I put it on the front and back. The front lasted for 2 weeks before I hit a large rock, blew the tube and wrecked the tire...I had to ride on it for a short distance because the strech of road I was on was not safe to stop. Since then I've avoided that strech of road. I replaced the hardshell with a gatorskin in the front. The back lasted until last Friday, when I found a staple (a big one)during my ride. I run with sheilds as well, so you can guess that this was an industrial sized staple. My ride takes me through industrial areas with rough roads, rocks (big and small) lots of nails, staples, screws and other stuff.

That all said, these tires have done way better and gone longer than any others. It's in part due to the 100 psi that I can put in them plus the improved stability of the tire itself. I'm sticking with these ones.

A sturdy road tire

The product is very sturdy. Went over some holes on the street, and it didn't affect the tires at all. No complaints... Just wish they were a little cheaper

Great product for a hard to find size

After 8 years of sitting in the garage decided to get back on my 1985 Motobecane so went to a local shop to get new tires. Got a flat the next day and looking at the tire (I should of done this right from the get go) I was disappointed in the quality of the tire as well as they squeezed a slightly smaller size on. Bought the Gator Hardshells based on some research and the fact they were the right size which is important when you are out on the road trying to fix a flat. While I am a casual rider (40 miles a weekend) I have had no issues or flats with these and would recommend them to others. Are the worth the extra money? To me yes and will buy them again when the time comes.

No more flat hassles

I was having flats nearly every time I rode. It got so I didn't even want to ride anymore because of the hassle. Now I have a bulletproof setup.

Gator hardshell tires.

Thorn guard inserts (don't remember the brand).

Michelin A2 Airstop tubes.

Several rides now, no flats. I'm very pleased. Perhaps the combination is slightly heavy, but not noticeably, and unimportant on my rides of 25 miles or less.

Best Bang for your Buck

I got to tell you boys and girls, if you want exceptional value for the same great products at your local bike shop you have come to the right site.

I live in Los Angeles area and these Gator Skin tires can cost any where from $50-70 dollars a piece.

Got like 2,700 miles on last set of tires probably could have gotten 3,000 though. The ride was starting to get a little ruff at 2,500, other then that great all around tires. Would recommend tires to anyone.

Best of all you can't beat the price!

hope this helps

Excellent 27 replacement tire

The tire is a great durable replacement for those old 27 inch rim bikes. I can under inflate this tire when running on rough surfaces without the fear of it coming off the rim.

Very Happy

The Continental Hardshell is the perfect commuter tire - I ride about 100 miles to work each week and enjoy not having to be overly concerned about flats - it is also nice to run them at 102psi for a good, fast roll - an added bonus is I purchased 3 tires for $116 (FREE Shipping!) - REI wanted to charge me $124 plus tax for TWO!! Very happy and happy to recommend Bike Tires Direct! Happy riding -)

You definitely get what you pay for with the gator tires

These Continentals are excellent tires. You get what you pay for. Seems like the best of any product type is made in Germany. I recently got some new wheels for my old Raleigh the kind with the inside lip or bead on the rim so I can use these clincher type tires. I need the 27x114 size which are getting harder to find. I run at 100psi and don't have flats. I never have to worry about the tires.

Great Tires

The tires are a bit rough-riding, however I feel comfortable riding them around because I'm not too worried every time I pass miscellaneous debris in the street which is common in New Orleans. Value is hard to judge, but I will buy another set of these, so I say good deal.

Great Tire

As a large rider, 275 lbs., I torture tires on my old 27 Puch. Many of the roads I ride are old asphalt with some scattered gravel here and there. Probably 23 of my flats were in the sidewalls from a piece of gravel. Tire pressue made little difference. I tried several brands of tires. After years of fixing a flat per month, sometimes more, I heard about Gatorskins from a friend that said his flat problem has virtually stopped since using them. I went on-line to shop for them and saw that they now had a hardshell version. It sounded just like what I was looking for. Though a little pricey, I haven't had to fix a flat, not one, since mounting these 4 months ago. Possibly because of the increased downforce that I exert I haven't had any ride problems. These babies roll smooth and fast. I think these are a good choice for us big folks.

In many ways, these are the best tires I have ever had.

Previous Specialized 27 tires have given me over 3,000 of good service. I know that is too much, but I was not having any problems riding the smooth, country roads of Kansas. When I moved to Texas, I began having far too many flats. I went to Slime and still had leakers and aggravation. The switch to these Gator Hardshell was good from the start. Far easier to install than the Specialized - just a skosh more ID -made the experience good from the start. While the ride is little rough, the peace of mind regarding flat protection is a fair trade. So far, I give these hand made in Germany Continentals high marks. Even their appearance is top-notch. Time is always the judge, but I think I will enjoy these tires for a long time.

3000 miles with no flats?!

I dont understand it, but I've logged 3000 miles with no flats, mostly commuting around Portland and a few road trips. I finally celebrated by putting new ones on and transferring the old ones to another bike. Ridiculously impressive. Solid ride.

Smooth And Fast

The tire arrived 3 days ago and I've only logged about 20 miles on it. It rolls smooth and fast. I can't speak to it's durability as yet, but I love it right now. Makes my old Puch Meteor Luxe feel like a real speedster. Because its' so stiff it was a little hard to install and had me wishing for a 3rd hand, well worth it though. I thought, This thing is going to ride like its' made of granite. Rides like a dream.
