Rugged Touring Shoes For Passionate Cyclists & Extreme Outdoor Adventurers
Designed for adventure-seeking cyclists who aren't afraid to wander off the beaten path—or up the side of a steep mountain—the Shimano EX900 blends the comfort and capability of a lightweight alpine hiking boot with the high performance of a clip-in MTB shoe. Boasting a unique dual-BOA closure, riders can smoothly transition from pedaling to hiking and back again. For maximum pedaling efficiency simply dial back ankle tension while keeping the lower BOA snug, then tighten up ankle support when your off-bike summit push begins.
The grippy rubber ULTREAD EX outsole features a technical lug pattern for outstanding traction on rugged, rocky, or wet terrain. Shock-absorbing EVA cushioning in the midsole reduces stress and strain on your feet, while the high-volume, relaxed fit keeps you comfortable even on the most daring hike-a-bike adventures. Comfort and security are further bolstered by a reinforced toe box and strategic padding that keep your feet protected from trail hazards whether pedaling or pushing your bike.
The EX900 touring shoes deliver efficient pedaling performance thanks to SPD clip-in pedal compatibility and a rigid nylon midsole plate that reduces unwanted flex, efficiently converting your energy input into pedaling power.

Reviews
I bought these shoes because I wanted something for commuting in the rain, and they were advertised as being waterproof. They are far from waterproof, considering they soak through after only about 10 minutes of rain riding. They do dry out quickly with the help of a fan. The other big issue is the sizing, which is about a full size larger than typical bike shoes. All that said, they do look good. They're grippy off the bike and comfortable to walk in.
This is a lightweight extremely high quality MTB shoe with ankle support and good hiking ability. I've used them about 1000 miles the last six months in mostly dry or light rain desert conditions down to 45 degF. They remind me of the old lace Shimano hiking boot MTB shoe from 25 years ago which was awesome. They are very well made. I can't comment about extreme water use I'd probably use a 45 N boot for that or some other Shimano if you can find them.
I think this is the first Shimano product I've ever given a one star, but this shoe is basically useless garbage in its intended purpose. Tried two pairs of these, one from BTD and another from a competitor and both leaked like a sieve in barely wet conditions, around the tongue area where it meets the toe area on top.
It's a shame because the shoe has a lot of potential, from its easy entry, good roominess, snug-but-not-pinchy cinching, and grippy outsole. A little lacking in the stiffness and power transfer departments for my ideal standards/taste, but not so bad that the shoe isn't good for mountain biking in.
Also a shame because it's virtually impossible these days to find a non-insulated Gore-tex MTB shoe anymore, after Shimano added insulation to the MW7 and MW5 lines of shoes and competitors like Northwave and Lake did the same. Apparently no one sees the value in having a shoe for bridge season conditions like Winter to Spring and Fall to Winter that are wet, but don't need to be insulated.
