The Vario PS: A Backpack & A Pannier
Ortlieb's Vario PS Backpack/Pannier is an innovative hybrid with highly versatile dual applications as both a bike bag and waterproof rolltop commuter backpack. The bag's quick, intuitive conversion between modes employs a reversible front pocket design which quickly converts from QL2.1 mount to a full-coverage padded carrying system.
The backpack's ergonomic shoulder straps are lined with reflective trim that is highly visible in both pannier and backpack mode. Structured interior and exterior pocketing includes a laptop sleeve, convenient carrying handle and stabilizing chest strap.

I am a cycle commuter. I also have a 1/4 mile walk from the bike rack to my desk. I have had this bag about two months. It converts quickly and easily from backpack to pannier and back again. This is the fifth Ortlieb bag that I own. I have yet to really wear one out.
This bag carries my lunch, a change of cloths and my computer. Took it traveling, perfect for carry on. Worth the money.
If you can get past the ridiculous price tag, the Ortlieb Vario does exactly what it advertises -- a single pannier that can hook on to a rack or be used as a backpack. The conversion is simple and all the moving parts are reinforced to reduce wear and tear. I commute 2x a week and walk 2x a week, so this has eliminated the need to transfer all of my work stuff from pannier to backpack. The laptop sleeve is and outside pocket are much appreciated details. I'm not surprised they're sold out. Highly recommend.
I've tried many backpack pannier combos. This one is simply the best. The conversion process is seamless and not cumbersome.
One of the straps failed and support sent me new straps that can be screwed on! Repairability isn't something I looked for but is awesome to see.
Only criticism is that I wish it had more organization.
