Fuel to Buffer the Burn

The Maurten Bicarb System is an advanced fuel for high-intensity training and racing. It uses Hydrogel Technology to encapsulate sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and make high doses tolerable for athletes.

During all-out, high-intensity exercise, acidity in the blood increases — overwhelming the muscles and leading to exhaustion. Large doses of sodium bicarbonate counteract the negative effects of rising acidity, but there has always been a catch: a volatile reaction with stomach acid that can cause gastrointestinal distress, canceling out any performance gains.

The Maurten Bicarb System uses hydrogel to transport the sodium bicarbonate directly to the intestines, circumventing the stomach's acidity. This allows athletes to consume large amounts without experiencing gastrointestinal distress.

How & When

Bicarbonate can be used in training and racing for sports that require intermittent or constant intensity near or above the anaerobic threshold — such as cycling, middle-distance running, rowing, swimming, team sports, and combat sports. It can also be used in threshold (interval) training for all types of endurance sports.

During endurance events with periods of intense exercise or when athletes are able to maintain intensities at a high percentage of their maximal aerobic capacity, sodium bicarbonate has the potential to improve performance. This is currently an area of intense and ongoing research

Always prepare and consume the Maurten Bicarb System at least 1.5–2 hours before intense exercise — and at least an hour after a proper meal, such as breakfast. This is to allow enough time for the mini bicarbonate tablets to reach the intestine and be absorbed.
