The new GP4000 S II really does deliver on all fronts, combining speed and amazing handling with impressive puncture resistance and extended tread life. Just like the original GP 4000 S, this is one of the fastest, most durable, and best-riding tires available. In fact, it's even better—Conti claims that thanks to continued R & D, they're able to improve the venerable Black Chili compound by 3-4% every year, so the new model has even better adhesion in wet and dry conditions, better durability, and lower rolling resistance.

For those not clued into Black Chili, this is the lingo Conti uses for their top rubber. As the name implies, it can only be made in black—hence this tire's all-black center tread. In a nutshell, Black Chili is an incredibly dense rubber, made up of particles roughly ten times smaller than those typically used in bike tires. Placing this wonder compound directly at the contact patch results in a tire that's not only more durable, but more able to conform to (grip) the road. It's also more resistant to UV rays, helping it to resist cracking and premature tire wear. Add colorful sidewall options to the mix and you've got the best of both worlds, performance and style.

The tire also features Conti's patented Vectran puncture protection barrier underneath the tread. Originally developed by NASA in the construction of space shuttles and suits, Vectran is a tough but lightweight material that allows Conti to keep their tires extremely light while providing tremendous puncture protection.

The Grand Prix 4000 S II features a three-ply 330 TPI Icasing. Kevlar folding bead. Max inflation is 120 PSI. Claimed weight is 205 grams (700c x 23mm)

Simply the best.

After riding an older model of Grand Prix for years, I first got the GP 4000S's-used-thrown in when I bought a wheel set. I have been very impressed with the feel and durability of these tires, to say the least!

I commuted on them for a year through the unforgiving streets of Oakland, 20 miles a day, without a single flat. I also did long rides on the weekends (including century rides), again NO flats. And these were pretty well used tires when I got them. I weigh about 135 and ride fixed steel but don't skid much.

Of course, when it was time to get fresh tires I didn't hesitate to buy a new set of GP 4000S's. Bike Tires Direct had a great price and I got my tires FAST. With the new set, I can really appreciate the velvety smoothness of these babies when I'm riding. Installation was no problem at all using levers and the usual moderate amount of elbow grease.

You're doing your research and will come to the conclusion that these are the ones to get. You will not be disappointed. Oh, and the really tough looking German ladies on the box are a nice touch.

Only tire I use

The GP4000S and the updated GP4000SII tires in 25mm width are the only tires I use. While I may get more flats than with Gatorskins, the speed advantage that these tires provide is worth the extra flatting risk. These tires are well made, fairly easy to install on my wheels, and give me good wear. I average about 3500 miles when used on the rear with about triple the life when used on the front. I typically put my new tires (newest on the front) on the wheels I use for group rides and ultras and move the older more-used tires to my training wheels keeping detailed records of where the tires get their miles.

Excellent Tire!

I use the GP4000 25mm on my training and race wheels. They provide a nice ride and good mileage. In the winter I switch over to a GatorSkin which hold up better on the sand covered road shoulders in Spokane.

Favorite tires for road bike

I use the both the 700x23 and 700x25 on my road bike for training and racing (wider 25 if I know roads are bad). While they may wear out a bit faster than some of the heavier training tires, the performance and feel make up for it. I am about 160 lbs and pump them up to between 100 and 110psi.

Puncture protection is what you would expect from a fast tire, I haven't had any problems because generally I can avoid pot holes or glass. In both wet and dry conditions, they have maintained good traction with the road.

Very good road tires

I've been running GP4000s tires for the past several years, and while they are relatively expensive, I find they outlast cheaper tires by as much as twice the mileage. Plus, they are quite good guarding against punctures - a big plus.

The rubber compound creates good contact with the road, especially when the road is wet.

I used the 700X25 tire as a race day ride with a lot of climbing and descending. At a weight of 170lbs these tires work well then riding on rural roads, some of with are rough in spots. When riding on a long day in the saddle it is nice to drop the pressure to about 110 psi and still be able to corner well. A word of advice here being as I live in a very dry climate lower the air pressure when between rides. I've had cracking issues with other Continental tires.

Great for racing and training

I use these tires for training and racing, when I use clinchers, of course. The wear is excellent, as is the ride and handling. The sale price makes these tires the best deal on any tires. I have used Kendas and Michelins, which do not compare, in my opinion. I ride and race 6,000 to 7,000 miles per year.

BEST TIRE OUT THERE, FAST, RESPONSIVE, AND DURABLE, EXPENSIVE BUT WORTH IT!!!

Best tire I've ever used in 15 yrs of riding. They might not be as durable as the much heavier gatorskins, but are not far off. I ride in TX in the heat and sun and they have done great. I've ridden on days of 108 temps without any issues (the pavement was probably 120-130)!! If you're looking for a fast durable training-racing tire, look no further!!!!

Hands down the best clincher on the market, awesome grip and tread wear.

This has been my only tire for all of my road riding for the past 5 years and I always keep a set on hand so I can wait for Bike Tires Direct to offer them at a steal. I average 3 to 4 thousand miles per year and have never been left wanting for a different tire.

Great tuff tire

The roads I ride on in northern Ontario are not very smooth and what they call pavement is more like chips and dust. I find these tires wear very well with no punctures and excellent grip.

My Trusty Standby

I have used this tire for several years. They are quite durable for a high performance tire and has good to excellent puncture resistance. Great tires for the rough road surfaces in my area. However, they have become a bit too expensive.

I have used these for years, after reading about the low rolling resistance and good wear.

These wear as well as any of the better tires I have used, and vastly better than some. They are fun to ride and flats are rare when in the first 1000 miles with these tires.

Wicked Tires

Fast, supple road feel and easy to mount. The GP4000S is THE go to tire for me. I noticed a difference in ride quality and picked up a kmh or two right away after replacing my Vredestein Fortezzas with these. Simply put, I will probably never ride another tire, these rock.

Good ride and wear but lots of flats and dangerous sidewall faliures

In the last year I switched from Verdestein Tri Comps to the continental 4000S based on reviews and recommendations. The ride and wear characteristics are good but I've had far more flats with these tires than the Verdesteins and others I've used riding the same roads under the same conditions. More recently I've had 2 occurrences of sidewall cuts-without prior noticeable impacts-that resulted in tire failure. One occurred on a new front tire and put me on the ground at over 30mph. Other club members have also experienced sidewall failures with no apparent reason. The sidewalls on these tires are far too thin to be safe and flat protection is minimal. I'm changing tires.

Great all around tire

I've used Vredestein Fortezza TriComps for over 8 seasons and was happy with the results. My new Focus Izalco Pro came with OEM Continental Gran Prix and they will be my new tire of choice moving forward. I had over 3,500 miles on the original tires and decided to swap them out to use on a spare bike while they still had some miles left. The Grand Prix offer great cornering, handeling and durability. Great tires.

Nice riding tire, but too many flats.

I really wanted to like these tires as they have lots of positive reviews and are not cheap. I do like the way they roll, but as far as being durable, they have performed abysmally for me. Over the summer these tires were fine and I was really enjoying them, but once it got closer to Fall and all the goat heads came out, I have been getting lots of flats. Some flats I can see a goat head, some flats I cannot find a goat head. Since Fall, I have had close to 10 flats. One morning I went to go for a ride and discovered I had a flat. I put in a new tube and went for a ride, less than 1 mile later, another flat. I guess this tire is just not going to work in my goat head infested area.

Just the right balance for an all season tire.

I have been using Grand Prix tires since they were first introduced. The 4000s are a great balance between good mileage and road feel. In the summer I put GP4000s 700x25 on the rear to increase the amount of rubber the touches the road on those long high speed descents in the upper 40 mph range. In the spring and fall I use 700x23's on front and back because they are a little lighter and I am not so concerned about a high speed tempo. In the summer when it is warm you can remove the tires without irons when those unforeseen punctures occur.

Since first use, have not felt a need to try any other tires

Since I first tried the 700x23 GP 4000S about six years ago, I have not seen the need to try any other tires. I'm 210lbs and ride about 150 miles a week throughout the cycling season, putting in about 3500 miles per year. I ride a Trek 5200 OCLV with Bontrager Race wheels. These tires have not let me down. They grip well, seem to have a low rolling resistance, hold up well in road debris, and meet my price expectations when purchased at BikeTiresDirect. I also like the Gatorskins, but prefer the 4000S. Other riders that I have turned onto the 4000S tires also seem to like them. Maybe someone can explain to me why I can buy a car tire mounted, balanced, and out the door cheaper than I can buy a bicycle tire at MSRP?
