Great rear tire in the winter so far

I'm riding an Orbea Wild this year, but last year I was on a Santa Cruz Bullit. I was off the bike for half the year due to injury so I'm only up to around 2,200 mi this year to date. I do burn through tires with the ebike and the amount of riding I usually get in throughout the year.

I have been running a DHR2 DD Maxxterra as a rear tire year round for the last few seasons in the PNW. We have year round riding here, though it does get wet and we do get some snow from time to time. The dirt goes from damp but good under the trees, to muddy and mucky in the clear cut, to loamy and deep on the steeps here. It is a large range of conditions in the winter that we have to contend with.

I originally got the Shredda rear as a front tire and ran that with my DHR2. I found my back end was breaking loose a lot more than usual and I decided to try the Albert in their DH casing and soft compound to see if matching radial casings would make a difference. Wow, the impact of moving to the Albert in the rear was immediate and startling. The back end completely stopped letting go and the combo here of the knarly front tire with the Albert rear was pretty much perfect for our wet riding. I think with the Shredda in the front the DHR2 just couldn't keep up since I was able to push harder into corners before running out of grip.

I am running the Albert at 27-28 psi when I usually run my DHR2 in the winter closer to 23-24. It definitely felt a bit vague and folding at 23-24 psi in the fast corners so I upped the pressure as recommended. At the higher pressure I don't have any vagueness when cornering. Even with the higher pressure the traction is great, especially over wet roots and rocks. Braking traction is good, not nearly as good as the Shredda but I'm willing to sacrifice that for a bit faster rolling. I don't know that I could handle the Shredda front and back in terms of rolling speed.

I have about 300 miles on it so far and it's holding up great. I'm planning on running a super soft Albert front in the summer with this same rear tire. If only they weren't so expensive!

Thank you for your feedback.

I am impressed!

I have been a long time Assegai fan and this tire has been just as good in dry, hardpack (probably better), dry loose, wet roots, and leaves. I haven't done any mud riding yet so can't judge there. What really impressed me was the change to this tire felt like I upgraded the fork in terms of grip, reduced fatigue, and ride feel.

Mounted on a RM Instinct Powerplay, front, 24 to 26 psi, avg 16mph trail riding.
