Gravel Performance Plus Protection
The Shimano SH-RX801R is the rally edition of their gravel racing shoes, featuring a knitted ankle cuff to keep debris out and provide all-day comfort and protection from the elements in a broad range of riding conditions. Following the success of the original RX8, Shimano is back with updates to make the best even better.
The shoe is built around a super stiff and lightweight carbon composite sole for high-speed gravel racing. Below are lightweight, abrasion-resistant TPU lugs for the best balance of pedaling performance and off the bike capability. Above is a surround wrapping upper pattern with supple synthetic leather that balances holding power and comfort. Plus you'll be sure to stand out with vivid inkjet printed graphics with bold design.
The whole package is held together with low-profile BOA® Li2 dials with rubber grip allowing quick and precise micro-adjustments. And from foot to shoe to pedal, the RX801 is engineered with SPD pedals for maximum pedaling efficiency and stability.
Features:
- Knitted ankle cuff
- Wear and weather resistant synthetic leather upper
- Carbon sole with Shimano Stiffness Index: 10
- BOA Li2 dials
- SPD (2-bolt) cleat compatible

Reviews
I wanted some stiffer SPD shoes with good toe box volume, but didn't want to spend a fortune since most of my serious rides are done with 3-bolt pedals. BTD had the SH-RX801Rs on sale for a fantastic price and I thought they were worth a try. Unfortunately, I found that the size 43s were just too big for my feet (I primarily wear 42.5, or 42 if the toe box is extra roomy, in other brands). That wouldn't have been a dealbreaker except where the ankle sleeve meets the upper put too much pressure on the top of my foot. BTD was great about handling an exchange for a pair of regular SH-RX801s in 42.5, which I've worn quite a bit on my smart bike indoors without the ankle pain.
If you generally don't have painful pressure from shoes where the upper meets the ankle, or fit in full size, then I could see the SH-RX801Rs being a great option. The single BOA is as good as many double BOA shoes at foot retention.
I've been struggling to find an XC race shoe that fits my wide foot for years. I've always had to settle with my feet hurting, but these fit like a glove.
The gaiter/cuff is kind of annoying for a few reasons. It makes the shoes harder to take on and off, plus sometimes the fabric pinches/bunches near the bend in my ankle and isn't the most comfortable. Finally I can see this trapping heat and making the shoe hot around the ankle/top of the foot.
These gripes are minimal due to the overal comfort of the shoe itselt. Very happy with the purchase.
