For those who'd rather explore than race, the Edge Touring Plus places essential ride metrics alongside Garmin's most robust cycling-specific GPS navigation to date.

Though this Edge is essentially focused on mapping and navigation, you still get speed, distance, and other must-have data out on the road or trail. Unlike the slightly pricier Touring Plus model, this base unit is not compatible with heart rate monitors. But like the Edge 510 and 810 models, the Edge Touring features a convenient touchscreen interface, and it's compatible with Garmin's Connect and Adventure communities, making it possible to search out for new rides, and share new rides, and relive your adventures.

By narrowing the features to mapping and essential ride data, the Edge Touring is also afforded the longest battery life of the Edge line. The unit is capable of running for up to 17 hours, making it a reliable companion on even the most epic journeys. Like Garmin's other touchscreen computers, the Edge Touring is highly water resistant, compact and completely unobtrusive, so you can get lost in the ride, without getting lost.

    Difficult to read

Just about the only good thing about this GPS is that it mounts on a bike. Otherwise, it is difficult to read under most lighting conditions, and it does not pick the best bike routes to get to a destination. For example, I would expect it to cut through neighborhood roads especially it has a shorter distance, but it just follows the major public roads. And it is difficult to tell (because of poor screen readability) whether or not it is tracking the progress. Often, I make one way trip to a destination such as a restaurant, and then I turn it off while dining. I come back home thinking the unit is back on, but forget to restart by pressing the start button. I keep looking at the screen not realizing it is not tracking my progress. If I break it, would I buy another one? That is a good question as it is better to have one than not having it. Let's just say, it is a poorly executed gadget needing lots of improvement.

    Impressive but not perfect

Navigates very well when you input an address as the destination. Very impressive. Navigating with preloaded routes works well. The round trip feature does not work so well - if you make a wrong turn it gets confused and sends you back home.

The longest I've ridden with it is about 6 or 7 hours and the battery was down to 30%. I'm not sure it would last on a ten hour ride. But maybe.

The elevation only appears on screen when using navigation and not when you're just riding around.

The instructions don't explain how to input a route from an external source. Here's how: copy the route into the Garmin/NewFiles folder.

    Overall easy to use.

User Friendly, Easy to read and accurate

I use this product when I mountain bike. The trail names and streets are clear and accurate, the zoom works great which helps you to find you way back home from anywhere
