I've had them all - 530, 840 Solar, 850, 1040, 1050, Roam V2, etc.
The 850/1050 have amazing screens and the tones are so much more pleasant than the beeps of the 840 Solar. For turns, you get almost a nice tapping of a turn signal. There are a ton of other niceties on the 850 and 1050 platforms - but the tones were pleasing, screen was so nice, etc.
But the biggest killer is battery life. My one gravel bike couldn't fit the 1050, so I sold and got an 850. You are looking at like 9-10hrs at normal settings. I had a buddy do a 130mi gravel event and it died maybe 10mi before the finish. That's simply unacceptable - these things need to be able to do single day rides no matter how long they are.
I'm keeping my 840 Solar which has absolutely amazing battery life and waiting for an 860. I don't care if the screen is slightly worse - it needs to have 15-18hrs at normal settings - long enough for a 1-day long event ride. And I know I could get a 1050, but it's huge - I MTB too and having a $700 monstrosity sitting out front of potential tree limbs isn't the best idea. Small, 15-18hrs battery, pleasing tones, good screen (doesn't need to be 850 good) and we got it.

Fresh out of the box, the Garmin Edge 850 would not load maps, workouts and as part of normal setup. I had great customer service and troubleshooting with the Garmin technical team.
My purchase was replaced under warranty.
Even after replacement, it took a full 45 minutes on the phone with Garmin tech support to setup the 850. It is working fine now. I really am not sure of the nature of the glitch in the 850 but it sure to a lot of doing to get it to work.
I got a good deal on the price at BTD!

Really like this as an upgrade from my 830. Much brighter screen and a host of worthwhile improvements. Glad I upgraded.
