OK light, but with a few functional bugs

First off - with the distracted texting cell phone addicted public out there - you have to keep yourself alive by having a tail light these days. That said, this light is very visible from long distances, but not as flashy as other models I have seen on the road during races. It also charges easily and seems to hold a charge long enough for about a 4 hour ride. After about 20 recharges, still getting about 3.5-4 solid hours.

Having read reviews on the strap breaking, I thought I would lick it strictly by never removing it, which does seem to be a winning strategy.

But there are a few bugs angle adjustment bounces up, then never comes back down. After a run over a rail road track the light is pointing at your tail end. The switch stopped fully functioning after a few months and is now either all the way on, or off, and no intermediate flashing adjustment capability.

Pros cost, visibility, ease of recharging

Cons poor switch, inability to solidly lock the angle of light

Too many design flaws...

I am a big fan of Light and Motion, but this light just has too many flaws. It is tough to know which setting you are on so it might run out of power early. But the biggest flaw is the recharge port. It is on the bottom so if the seal comes loose during a ride dirt and water will get kicked into it. Also when charging with the provided USB cable it comes out or loose so the light isn't properly charged. I cleaned the port and somehow got water inside. Now I have a light with water inside.

Update to earlier review

I wanted to post a quick update on an earlier post, switch issue reported was operator error, a hard push on the button is on and off, a soft push on the button toggles through the brightness settings. Works like a charm now that I understand button action better.

Awesome Light - Problematic Mount

This is a great light. I love the brightness and options for less brightness. I love the side visibility and that the side visibility is yellow. This says that I am a vehicle on the road. I love that it's USB charge. I don't like that it's pretty geeky, but I can get over that.

The main problem is, as two others mention, the mechanism used to adjust the angle. To tighten mine enough that it wouldn't move around on descents (road bike,) I've messed it up. I'm pretty careful about such things, but I've messed it up regardless. It's now on my bike with zip ties which is a bit lame.

Flawed

Light worked great for about a month and then the onoff button started acting up to where it eventually stopped working all together. Also the re-charge port is on the bottom where it picks up lots of grime during winter rides.

Very visible, mount is the weak link

The light is very bright and run time, as far as I can tell, is as advertised. The mount design looks and feels quite fragile. If the bolt is tightened sufficiently to prevent the light from rotating up when you hit potholes and bumps, the ratchet mechanism feels too tight for the strength of its components. I have been very careful when mounting and adjusting the angle of the light and it has held up so far, but it doesn't inspire confidence. I wouldn't se surprised if it breaks, but maybe it will not.

Great light with a few design flaws

This tail light is VERY bright, especially on the highest setting, and emits light from its sides as well as the back face to ensure visibility from different angles.

However, a few design issues keep this product from earning 5 stars. First, the mounting bracket has a ratchet mechanism that allows you to angle the light for optimal visibility (i.e., rather than pointing down at the road from your seatpost). Unfortunately, the ratchet hinge broke within my first week of use, now, the light wobbles on the hinge. Second, the USB charger port is located on the underside of the light, directly exposed to road spray. The port has a silicon cap, but Im concerned about long-term exposure to winter road salt. Third, the light pulses so faintly, you can barely detect the pulse. Maybe there's some science to support this feature, but I suspect that a distinct blinking frequency grabs drivers' attention better. Fourth (finally), the onoff button doesn't give a positive click when you press it. Thus, turning the light on/off, or adjusting its setting, is a hit-or-miss gesture. I've learned that you just have to press the button really hard and wait for the light to react, sometimes it's immediate, other times it takes 2-3 seconds. Annoying! Why can't the on/off switch on this tail light function like the switch on every other Light & Motion product?

Simple, convenient, and effective

The simple rubber mounting loop works great for quickly and securely attaching the light to your seatpost or frame. I swap this taillight between bikes all the time without issues.

The USB recharging is awesome, it uses the same microUSB plug and charger as an Android phone, so if you happen to have one, you can use the same charger or laptop to charge this, and it charges perfectly. Makes it incredibly convenient to plug in on my desk at work once or twice a week to recharge.

The default pulsing mode is what really makes this my new favorite taillight. Instead of being either steady-on binary flash like most lights, this one does a cool organic breathing thing, where the red light pulses between low and hi levels. Very attention grabbing but not as spasctic as flashing.

I love it, and have nothing bad to say about this light. Every detail is perfect for my use of daily commuting.

A Shining Tail Light

I use the tail light on my daily commutes here in New York and I am happy with it. It is rechargeable, easy to install and remove. The only place I would mark it down is in the stiffness of the on off switch.

Great Taillight

This light is super bright, easy to mount and unmount quickly, and is USB rechargeable.

This light is lighter than the previous L&M vis180. Battery life is shorter than the the Vis180 and I find I need to charge after about 6-8 hours of use. Charging is super simple, just plug it into any USB port.

Safety and Convenience

In the past, I have had relatively simple tail lights but was attracted to this light primarily for its brightness and side lighting. I am very happy with my purchase. The best attributes are

1. Side Lighting - not only can someone see me from the rear but also from the side. This is a great benefit in cross roads and intersections.

2. Brightness Settings - several levels of brightness PLUS a pulse mode. This assists battery life and also helps control the visibility you need in different ambient light conditions.

3. USB Charging - each night after my commute, I simply plug my tail light and Taz 800 into USB chargers and I'm good to go in a few hours. This is enormously convenient.

4. Bike Attachment - seat post, tool bag, backpack. Any of these work well.

I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Safety and convenience.

It does the job.

I haven't had this item that long. It seems to have pretty good battery life and I'm hopeful that it will continue to do so. It's nice not having to deal with packing batteries. Though I'm a bit disappointed with the pattern this light has. It is either on or doing a low slow pulse. Not really the pattern that is going to grab the attention of a driver.

A High Viibility, Long-Lasting Tail Light

Have these on two bikes that are each ridden several times weekly. A good performing light....on the second-level intensity pulse setting (which is still very bright) these lights have not drained their batteries on rides lasting over 4 1/2 hours. Clips nicely onto the rear loop of a tool/spare tube bag. Clip snap-action is stiff - at first you think you're going to break it to unsnap it but fear not, the clip is very sturdy...I'd buy this light again.

Disappointed in my purchase

Wanted a reasonably priced, rechargeable tail light to supplement the blinky on my pack. This light is REALLY difficult to turn on and off. Maybe it's just the one I have, but it takes me several attempts each time, and sometimes I just give up. I like the size, the mounting system works fine, would prefer blinking to only pulsing, but that's not a deal breaker. I have a L and M headlight that I love.
