For pushing the limit and cheating the wind, the ENVE SES 7.8 Disc Brake Carbon Clincher's deep-profile and optimized design cannot be beaten. Its "smart" construction pairs wind-slicing carbon fiber rim tech with ENVE's own ultra-lightweight full-carbon hubset.
The rim design has been re-designed for disc brake setups, and starts with ENVE's bombproof, featherweight carbon composite, proprietary molded in spoke hole technology, and proven textured braking surface. Then, both the front and rear rims are shaped using data collected by Smart Aero Technology™, a third party research and design group run by former Formula One engineer Simon Smart. Their process relies on extensive wind tunnel testing to determine the optimal rim width and depth for reduced drag and confident handling. In the case of the SES 7.8, the front rim is 29 mm wide and 71 mm deep, while the rear is 27.5 mm wide and 80 mm deep, dimensions that were modeled on today's modern aero frames designed for 25 mm tires to take full advantage of the additional clearance and to ensure wheels whose performance stacks up on the bike, not just in standalone wind tunnel figures.
This version includes the iconic Chris King R45CL Center Lock disc hubset, made right here in Portland, Oregon. Both hubs feature an extremely lightweight hub body paired with a 6-bolt rotor mount. With the front hub, heat-treated steel bearings sit inside surgical-grade steel races for a smooth rolling, highly efficient riding experience. Designed to roll fast out of the box, as the R45D's bearing tracks burnish these hubs actually spin faster, and with a fully-serviceable rebuildable design, the R45D's are designed for a lifetime of use, and built-to-last. Out back, the iconic 45-tooth RingDrive system provides lightning-fast engagement with virtually no drag.
