Great Smart Bike, but some quality issues

The box arrived on time but was clearly damaged. I watched the UPS driver unload it and my immediate reaction was "Holy Sh*t dude! That's an expensive item!" I commented to the driver about the obvious damage to the box and he said, "Yeah, that stuff happens." During the unboxing process I took several photos in case I encountered any issues. Once the box was open I found a plastic piece, about 6" square by 1/4" thick, that was lying loose within the packaging. I think it was some kind of packaging support (it doesn't belong on the bike anywhere) and it was cracked all the way through, further evidence of the rough handling during shipment. I found a cover screw missing on the bike and, using a screw from the hole next to the vacant hole, determined that the hole was stripped thus the screw fell out. The seat rail would not slide on to the seatpost all the way. It would get stuck just as the first position (1) indicator was lining up with the arrow. I tried lubricating it but it didn't help. I'm an amateur machinist so I got out a machinists rule and determine the seapost 'I' beam rail was warped. Garmin is sending me a free replacement for the seat rail and the seat post, but hasn't said what they plan to do about the missing screw and stripped hole. Garmin said the seatpost must have been bent during shipment, but this is a substantial piece of metal and it didn't show any damage. And though the box was damaged there is no way the packaging could have withstood the kind of force that would have been required to bend the metal 'I' beam. My theory; the 'I' beam is warped right where it is welded to the top of the seatpost, so I suspect it's a problem that results from the heat of the welding process. I've ridden it and really like it a lot. I definite upgrade from the Neo Flux 2 was using previously. But the two quality issues I've encountered leave a nagging doubt about future reliability. Will more screws fall out over time? Was anything internal loosened as a result of the rough handling during shipping that might fail later?

Almost Great

I expected BTD to send me a request to review my recent purchase, so here goes. After riding my Saris PT300 for nearly 20 years now, I had been contemplating upgrading to a "smart" bike for some time but hard a time justifying the expense when I really just used my trainer to burn some calories while counting the days until spring. But when my wife, who absolutely hates riding a spin bike unless it's in a group at the club with some head-banging techno music led by some 30-year-old boy toy, said that she wanted to get a smart trainer and start riding more this winter, I decided it was time. Instead of buying individual trainers for each of us, we decided it would be more convenient to simply buy a smart bike. We researched the various offerings and decided on the Tacx Neo. Even better was that we scored a smokin sale with free shipping at BTD!

The bike arrived literally overnight as we are just a couple of hours from their east-coast warehouse. The packaging was superb, and it took me all of ten minutes to set the bike up and start pedaling. Two small issues did have to be rectified, however. First, one of the leveling feet was tightened so tight that I actually stripped the cheesy plastic Allen head bolt that secured it. I had to resort to a pair of channel locks to free it. Once it was loosened and adjusted, it was fine and should not pose any future problems. Second, the left crank arm was a bit loose, but that too was easily tuned just as you would any Shimano crank arm with a single pinch bolt and preloading end cap. After those to issues were corrected, it was just a matter of dialing in the fit (I suggest bringing the bike you most want to duplicate nearby and get your tape, level and plumb line to expedite that process) slapping on some pedals, and off I went into a new virtual world.

First off, like almost any new bike you buy, you'll want to swap the stock saddle for your favorite. While the stocker was tolerable for short rides, it simply didn't cut it for longer sessions. Next, you'll want to download the app on your device so you can dial in the trainer settings. For a guy who is fairly tech-savvy but not a total geek, the app is simple and intuitive. Being able to customize gearing is slick, and much to my surprise the fans work way better than expected. Those too can be adjusted to vary based on speed, power or heart rate.

Overall, the build quality of this bike is exceptional. It is absolutely solid and doesn't flex a bit under my 185lbs. Upon my first ride the first thing I noticed immediately was how life-like the feel of pedals were, especially relative to that of a more typical spin bike with a heavy flywheel. In addition, on my old Saris, whenever I did hard intervals or sprint sessions, I would often

Great design but some quality issues

I bought the Neo because I wanted a smart training setup my wife and I could both use. We're both enjoying it so far. In terms of the product performance, I really like it but hope it holds up. I have encounter two quality issues. First the I beam shaped rail at the top of the seatpost was warped. I assume it occurred as a result of the heat applied during welding in manufacturing, there is no way a piece of aluminum that stout could have been bent in shipping without destroying the box. Garmin replaced it for free and included an additional seat mount, which is nice since my wife and I use different seats. But the disturbing thing is that the deflect should have been caught during any product inspection. Given the warp there was no way the seat mount was going to slide onto the seatpost rail. So what other parts of the trainer weren't inspected before assembly? Second, there was a screw missing from one of the covers. I tried moving a screw from another location to the empty hole and discovered that the hole was stripped, another quality issue not uncovered during manufacturing (Garmin hasn't offered me any solution to this issue).

Love this smart bike

We recently recieved our smart bike from BTD. There was a long wait (seems due to Garmin purchasing the company) and I was willing to hold off given the features of this bike vs. others. The bike was really easy to assemble (you need two people for putting the legs on, and it's only four easy to identify bolts. Once set up it was easy to pair the Tacx and Zwift apps, and the Tacx utility makes it possible to set the chainring and cassette spacing (and number of cassettes) to match the outside bikes. I am 6'2 and my wife is shorter so her seatpost height is at 3 and mine is 20 so be sure a shorter person (say under 5'5) would actually fit. Adjustment is easy with the supplied handles, and you can keep the internal bolts (bike comes this way) and do the adjustments with the supplied Allen wrenches (or your own of course). The bike is quiet, and the fans are nice (they speed up as you do) although some might not find them to sufficiently cool. The tablet mount is simple and functional. It takes a bit of practice to use the shifter buttons with fluency and not that bad. The road feel is cool and only presents on the back wheel but it's kind of fun. Comes with a free month of Zwift and Tacx. You have to download the Tacx utility to do the chainringcassette adjustment. So happy to have an indoor riding option!
