Ultegra has long been recognized as a solid performer and thanks to Shimano’s Systems Engineering approach the 6700 series continues to deliver. Lighter, more stylish and advanced by the latest Dura-Ace technologies, new Ultegra is a beautifully balanced group with optimal performance and specifications. Its unprecedented racing DNA takes shifting and braking to another level, with a weight reduction of 150g versus 6600 series.
The Ultegra 6700 crankset is based on the Dura Ace crankset with a hollow outer ring. You'll notice that there are no chain ring bolts coming through the outside ring. Shimano states that this design makes for a stiffer crankset. The shifters are designed after the DA 7900 with a changed pivot point for the braking to be easier from the hoods and the shift cables to be routed under the bar tape for a cleaner look. Unlike the 7900 though, the 6700 still maintains the "trim" feature of the front, or left, shifter. The rear derailleur has composite plastic plates and are wider for stiffness.

Shimano Ultegra 6700 Group Set
I had the local shop install this set on my 9 year old LightSpeed. It is the first "compact" set I have used, and I like the gear spread11-28 rear. It is possible to ride in the 15-20mph range and climb easily on grades exceeding 10% using only the inside chain ring. Doing so will allow you to easily use all sprockets of the rear cluster.
Finish quality is excellent. I very much like the anodized look of the chain rings, cranks, and brakes. There is little chance for corrosion or dis-coloration with time.
Shifting is precise and fast, and easy to adjust. I currently have about 1000 mi on the group and I have had no service or quality issues.
This product surpasses the quality of my prior Ultegra Triple Group. Very impressive.

The Sweet Spot
Those more thrifty than I will argue that 105 is the sweet spot in the qualityperformaceprice ratio of Shimano road groups sets, but for me this is it. One day I might splurge for Dura-Ace, but I know that the difference will be quite subtle and well beyond the point of diminishing returns for my budget. I will say that the 6600 triple ran much smoother than the 6700 triple does. I don't like that Shimano has me using the 6600 chain on the 6700 triple. I actually have switched to a 7900 chain (and cassette) and think the 7900 chain runs better on 6703 than the 6600 does. Ultegra is superb quality at a fair price.
