Maxxis has done it again with its latest XC race tire. The new Maxxis Aspen 29" pushes the limits of a lightweight XC tire designed to have minimal rolling resistance. The Aspen 29" is designed with a high-volume casing to smooth out the roughest roots and rocks, while the dual compounds gives optimal traction in the corners. So if crossing the finish line first is your top priority, then the Aspen 29" was designed for you. The Aspen 29" tire uses Maxxis's new Exception Series Racing Compound making a lightweight and durable 120 tpi casing. 29 x 2.1

Fast rolling race tire - surprisingly grippy. Super light at 520 grams

A fast-rolling, grippy, 29er race tire that weighs 520 grams, and has real albeit small tread? Yeah, right...that a unicorn you're riding?

True enough--the Aspen 29er weighs 520 grams on my digital postage scale. And it is indeed one fast tire. OK, with it's short tread, you won't want to take it in mud, and it's construction isn't heavy-duty. But for dry trails that don't require a tire with deep & agressive tread, the Aspen rides very well. I'd say it's as grippy as a Nanorapter, and just a bit less grip than a Crossmark. Only on quite loose terrain, during steep climbs or descents, does the Aspen fall a bit short--even then, it's performance is quite acceptable.

I use mine on the back, with a Racing Ralph on the front. I've heard from a fellow racer that the Aspen works very well on the front as well. Might have to try that. That same gent says it sets up fine, tubeless, using Stans sealant.

I told you guys at Bike Tires Direct to be sure to order plenty...were you listening?
