The Garmin Edge 500 is easy to set up and offers all the data fields you'll need to plan and analyze your training (or just learn more about your fun rides). Power, HR, cadence, distance, elevation, and time are the highlights but you can program many others and display up to eight fields at once if you really need all that realtime input. You cannot call up maps during your ride, so don't use the 500 as a crutch to get you through unplanned routes. You can, however, upload ride data to Garmin Connect (requires Garmin account setup) after you're done and use that information to plan future rides.
Aside from the easy setup, I really appreciate the simple low-profile design. I don't like clutter on my bike and the Garmin 500 helps minimize clutter with it's relatively small size.
My only caveat is for people who like/need/rely on calorie data. The Garmin 500 lowballs your caloric burn rate to an absurd extreme, so I recommend that you completely ignore this field. Power is a more accurate way to measure workload and energy burn rate, and no data trumps bad data any day.
