Lots of usable data, easy to install, easy to read

I bought this on the recommendation of a couple of friends (a coach and a Cat3 racer) who use the device. It was much easier to install on the handle bar mount than any other computer I have ever bought. The display is big and easy to read, and the ability to have multiple screens displaying as little or as much data as you want is great.

There are some quirks and a bit of getting to know you that goes into installing and using the device. But, I found a great YouTube video that walked me through the installation of this and the companion cadence device.

The device will also upload a ton of data to Garmin's site (no charge) that you can use to track your vital stats.

The other plus is that I have used this in the rain and it works just fine. The two weaknesses are 1) The magnet with the cadence monitor. On bumpy roads, it often moves just enough to mess up the reading. 2) The time it takes to find the satellites. I like to get on my bike and go, but often have to wait 2-4 minutes for it to find there satellites.

As noted above, I also bought the cadence monitor. Very easy to install. Also, I bought the heart rate monitor. Easy to use, comfortable, and syncs instantly with the computer.

All in all, it is one of the best computers on the market, especially if you can get it on sale!

Garmin 500 nice deal

Use when bike riding. Lots of good features but did not buy the heart rate strap. Did not think that was important. I'm not into serious stat numbers since I'm 65 years old. Good way to keep track of one's biking miles and calories burned.

True workhouse of the garmin edge lineup!

I needed a new computer, after reading reviews on the 510 and 800 edge model, I decided the 500 was exactly what I needed. I had the 705 previously but never used many of the functions. The 500 gives me all the necessary functions I need, cadence, speed, distance, all the basics, but also functions I use when climbing hills, simple setup I did by myself, about 10 minutes, the fact that it's not a touch screen isn't even a issue. It's tried and true, reliable, with all the functions a cyclist needs to record and monitor all your data. Plus bike tires direct included a free sram quick view computer mount! Great deal

I am very happy with my purchase!

I needed a bike computer which I can easily switch between my road bike and my commuter bike. I was also tired of dealing with wired computers and wanted support for cadence sensors. Two of my bike friends have Garmin 500 and they highly recommended this unit. I am not into Strava or sharing my rides with the whole world so I was worried that this computer is too much for my needs. Now 2 months after the purchase I am very happy. Pros great battery life, cadence, highly customizable screens. Cons I feel that screen is a little too small, unit dimensions are perfect I would just prefer a bigger screen that stretches from edge to edge. Some reported difficulties reading the screen in the full sunlight. I don't have this problem although the screen is definitely not like Kindle paper white. As a bonus I found this unit to be great for running or hiking. I stick it in my pocket and it tracks my distance or per mile pace when running. I still do not buy into the whole Strava craze but it is nice to upload the ride to Strava or Garmin and see the course map and all the stats.

Simple and perfectly adequate

The Garmin Edge 500 is easy to set up and offers all the data fields you'll need to plan and analyze your training (or just learn more about your fun rides). Power, HR, cadence, distance, elevation, and time are the highlights but you can program many others and display up to eight fields at once if you really need all that realtime input. You cannot call up maps during your ride, so don't use the 500 as a crutch to get you through unplanned routes. You can, however, upload ride data to Garmin Connect (requires Garmin account setup) after you're done and use that information to plan future rides.

Aside from the easy setup, I really appreciate the simple low-profile design. I don't like clutter on my bike and the Garmin 500 helps minimize clutter with it's relatively small size.

My only caveat is for people who like/need/rely on calorie data. The Garmin 500 lowballs your caloric burn rate to an absurd extreme, so I recommend that you completely ignore this field. Power is a more accurate way to measure workload and energy burn rate, and no data trumps bad data any day.

Easy to use and accurate

I like to climb and it's great to see how many feet I've done and what the percentage of grade is at any point. Heart rate helps me train efficiently and it syncs up perfectly to my Powertap wheel. Great tool

Great Product

My old 500 would not charge so I bought a new one. I had thought about he new 510 but the 500 was all I needed so I got a new one. When I got the new one the new charger charged my old one so now I have a trusty back up. More the better!

Love it, tells me everything I need to know

I love my 500. I had lost my first one, and this is the replacement. I considered the 510, thinking it may have better visualization in the glare, but after reading a 50 page essay online about the 510's ability to do everything but deliver coffee in bed. It seemed to be overkill.

Everything I need is in two menus, and for those of you who are having placement trouble with tri configured bikes, add the Zipp bracket to put the unit where you can see it!

A great GPS unit for a good price

This product has worked great! It was a great deal with the rebate as well. I use it with the heart rate monitor and the cadence/speed unit too. Both of the wireless sensors operated without any problems. The GPS and performance data uploads without any problems to Strava, Garmin Connect and Map My Ride. I have even bought a watch wrist strap and am going to use it when I run. You can customize the display screens to show whatever you want. It tracks everything you can think of on a ride.

An amazing cycling computer for the moderate to advanced cyclist!

This is a great cycling computer for the moderate to advanced cyclist. It offers a cadence, heart monitor and power meter compatibility along with a plethora of other data options that will be more than enough for the majority of cyclists. I currently use the Garmin heart rate monitor and cadence sensor that have been accurate and problem free. As well as those great features it offers a training mode GPS that allows you to really track your rides and see all the data available to tweak your skill set. A must have for a beginning cyclist planning on progressing in there cycling skill and love of cycling.

Just what I expected

Many people I ride with have these. I have a Forerunner 305 but decided I wanted the sleeker 500 with the altimeter. The 501 just came out and I seriously considered it but decided the extra bulk and cost wasn't worth it. I also was intrigued by the new Cateye which looks comparable but is cheaper. However, being a new product and reading a number of less that happy reviews, I went with the tried and true 500. I'm not disappointed in any way. Oh, one thing I liked better about the Forerunner is that it logs pauses in the database. The 500 does not.

Works Great. Data overload. Mapping ability so-so.

Does everything its supposed to do. Garmin Connect is perfectly fine for my needs. I actually prefer it over Strava. When downloading TCX files, the turn by turn directions come a little late. I often get the cue to turn as you are already in the turn. Wish you could customize the screens just a little bit more when using mapping features.

A real joy to track your rides

So far Iam enjoying all the data this unit collects. It works as advertised. Satellite recognition is quick. Milage and speed are accurate. No more keeping track on paper. Downloading into Garmin Connect is breeze.

Good product. Works fine.

Good product. Works fine. Wish there was an easy way to use a cable to connect to an iphone or ipad and upload training data to garmin connect, and then use the app to analyze results, as opposed to having to use a laptop and a web browser to both upload and analyze training data.

powerful little computer with lots of add ons

I got the neutral colored one and have added the HR and speed/cadance. I like the custom screen set up and the numerous different data options. I was using a Strada double wireless and this is a serious upgrade. I will be able to train a lot better and I look forward to just improving my cycling abilities. I am no racer but I would like to improve and this is the tool to help me. If your thinking about one of these do not hesitate.

Shouldn't have waited so long to get one.

Finally, after it seemed everyone I ride with was using a Garmin I purchased one. It is great. I should not have waited so long. The ease at which information is obtained both during and after the ride is great in analyzing your performance and training status.
