Easton has made a full carbon clincher that is both durable and has reliable braking. The biggest problem with carbon clinchers is unreliable braking due to heat buildup. Easton has created a braking surface with stopping power and modulation on par with aluminum by using a Thermatec treatment which resists heat buildup.
For strength Easton uses a double thick layer of carbon for the tire bead hook sidewalls that can withstand a metal anvil being dropped on it eight times in different spots from increased heights and still be ridden. Apparently, no other carbon clincher that Easton tested survived this abuse. Many manufacturers also machine the bead hook after molding which Easton doesn't do to preserve the structure of the carbon for even greater strength.
The 38mm deep rim is the perfect compromise between aerodynamic advantage and a good climbing wheel that isn't too susceptible to crosswinds. Aerodynamics are also improved thanks to Sapim bladed spokes.
18 spokes are laced radially in front while the rear has 24 spokes laced radially non-drive and 2X on the drive side. Red alloy nipples are light and add a nice aesthetic touch. The R4 SL hubs roll on grade 3 hybrid ceramic bearings and have a freehub body and rear axle with unnecessary material removed to save weight. Includes quick-release skewers, rim strips, and carbon-specific Swiss Stop yellow brake pads (the only pads recommended for use with this wheelset). Size 700c (622mm ISO). 1547 grams per set (weighed without included skewers).
