Reviews
Out of all the various gels, bars, candies and chews designed for quick energy while doing endurance sports, the Clif Bloks are my favorite. The are easy to open while on the bike without making a mess. You can put the partially consumed package back in your jersey pocket, again without making a mess. They taste pretty good, and they give you fast energy. They also have some electrolytes and some flavors have caffeine.
The only negative on these is that glycogen index is fairly low so you'll burn through the calories fast at some risk of raising your insulin levels which will reduce your long term endurance. Therefore, they shouldn't be used as your only source of calories. They work great in conjunction with something like Sustained Energy or Perpetuem.
Tearing open packages of liquid goo either results in a nasty jersey pocket, or litter. And a mouth full of goo in a 95 deg race (breathing hard) is nasty to swallow. Clif Bloks are easy to carry, easy to manipulate with 1 hand, easy to eat a little or a lot at once (about 30 cal ea piece, about 180 in a pack), and no mess. Flavors with caffeine are helpful, and there are enough flavors to satisfy everyone and avoid boredom.
Clif Shot Bloks Energy Chews, Cran-Raz my favorite. I use these during a ride so I can eat super-light before early morning rides & hills with a fast-paced cycling group. Have tried many solutions to cyclingstomach discomfort issues and found that ingesting a maximally-minimal amount of food upon waking and then eating some Shot Bloks during the ride keep my stomach pain-free and keep me from bonking. Also, Shot Bloks restore moisture to my mouth from all that open mouth breathing. Taste great too.
How can you go wrong with Clif Shot Bloks? They're a bit spendy IMO, but they are the easiest and most convenient energy food I carry. They don't leave the aftertaste of some gels and they're easier to consume on the go than bars.
I find this keeps well on a ride and is easy to consume a few blocks at a time, every hour or so along with water or your favorite electrolyte drink. Easy on the stomach and instant energy. All flavors are good but I sometimes prefer the caffeine jolt with a 12 or full shot.
These are the go-to energy shots. They taste like candy (depends on which flavor actually) and the Margerita ones are critical on hot or long rides with extra salt. Get Mountain Berry or Strawberry for candy-like, avoid Orange and citris if you want the candy effect
Found these to be really great for those rides in the hills around Southern Indiana. Each package contains 6 chews that can be squeezed out of the package as needed. Even the hot days of summer the chews did not melt. They were easier on the stomach than the sports drinks. I chew 2 about 15-20 miles to keep the legs pumping up the hills. I have not been bothered with cramps nor had sour stomach since switching to the chews.
So I'll use this review for 3 products the Jelly Belly's, Clif Shot Bloks and GU Chomps.
The JB's are easy to get into the bag and easy to eat while riding. The price is great and we prefer the regular JB's without the caffeine although I don't think I notice a big kick from the caffeine. These bags have a nice zip lock so if you don't eat them all they are easy to seal up for later. I like the fact that you are getting more than just sugar to help keep you going. These currently stay in our grab bag.
The Clif Shot Bloks, very easy to eat but the bag is a little difficult to get into the bags and easy to eat while riding. Bloks are softer and smoother while chewing than GU Chomps which makes it easier for me to eat while riding. It is great having the single row in the bag as it is easy to slide one at a time out. My disappointment with these is they are only sugar, organic sugar but just sugar, nothing else and they are just a little cheaper than GU Chomps but more expensive than Jelly Belly's. Once we finish up these we probably won't be buying any more.
GU Chomps, like blocks the bag can be difficult to get into and even more frustrating is getting them out. I also find the firmer texture of the Chomps more difficult to chew up and get dissolved. I find that I get little pieces that have gone down wrong and caused me to cough. If I'm going to eat these while riding I try to get them down on an easy on an easy stretch. Like Jelly Belly's the GU Chomps offer more than just sugar which is important in helping you get through your ride. I like the suggestion that 1 bag should be good for 1.5 - 2 hours of exercise, as I don't believe that JB's or Bloks offer that on their packaging. These will be beside the Jelly Belly's.
All of the above provide good energy and I've not experienced any crash after. With that said each individual is different so I suggest you try them all and keep what you like.
I use this product if there is going to be a lot of climbing in the next ten minutes. It's hard to tell how much it helps but I seem to make it up the hillsok. I perfer it over the gels because it makes less of a mess and is easy to eat while riding if I have opened the package prior to starting out.
I use the Bloks along with gels on longer rides when I need an energy jolt but still easily digestible. The density of the Bloks actually have substance and offer a totally different tactile feeling than the usual gels which makes eating them feel more like a treat. They seem to stay in your system longer and provide longer sustained energy. I ride and train in the rainy Pacific Northwest winters and not having to fumble for constant nutrition makes the Bloks a no brained.
I find it's a lot easier to consume a lot of calories using Shot Bloks instead of gel. I can tolerate all of the flavors, although I find strawberry a bit cloying, and I don't care to eat more than one package of the orange flavor per ride. Margarita flavor is a little weird but has a lot of salt so sometimes it is just the thing. In cold weather they can be a little tiresome to chew unless you keep the package warm.
Clif Shot Blocks have powered me through many rides on both my mountain bike and my road bike. They're great for a quick boost of energy, and good for long rides when paired with a Clif bar or other longer lasting fuel sorce. And, they taste good!
The Clif Shot Blocks come in a convenient package, taste good, and offer a quick boost of energy. For longer rides, they're best paired with another fuel source that's slower burning. Best of all, you don't have to eat them all at once like a gel - they won't leave a sticky mess if you put the half-eaten package back in your pocket. A variety of flavors offer caffeine, and the margarita flavor is great for hot days, offering 3x sodium. A must have for the avid rider.
