Won't go back now that I've switched...
Been running tubeless on my mountain bike for three years. This Spring I converted my twelve year old Bruce Gordon touring bike with its Mavic "Module 3 SPB" wheels. First I calling Stan to make sure that these wheels could be converted, then bought his tape and valves, and carefully watched his online video about how to convert road wheels. Paying attention to detail makes the difference. If you're not the type of person who pays attention to detail, my advice is to stick with tubes. If you do like to work with you bike and spend the time to follow instructions according to the directions, you owe it to yourself to try tubeless at some time in your life. My guess is you won't go back either.
I know I won't go back to tubed tires, for two reasons. First, for the same inflation pressure, these Fusion 2 tubeless tires ride like butter compared to other high quality, high thread count road tires. The Fusion 2s stick like glue and feel extremely stable in turns, also.
My road setup would not have held air without Stans, but even if it did like it does on my mountain bike, I would still add Stans. Why? Because this way I don't get flats if I pick up a thorn and small sliver of glass. And, in fact, even though my mountain bike setup holds air tubeless without Stans, I still put a couple of ounces to each wheel for the same reason.
A point of information, one needs to add Stans about every ten to twelve months depending on how much you ride, the temperature and humidity of the area, because it very slowly dries out. I found this out the hard way when I picked up a thorn on a mountain bike ride and lost air. Normally it would seal in just a couple of seconds with Stans, but in this case it didn't. When I got home and investigated, I found that after a year, the Stans had dried up and the air was leaking audibly and palpably from the thorn hole. I removed the valve stem, put in another 2 ounces of Stans, pumped up the tire, and the Stans leaked out for 2-3 seconds and sealed up... like it always does.
I am in my sixties, weigh 148 pounds, and I am not a racer by any means. So I can't speak to the suitability of these tires for racing or for heavier riders, but for comfort, cornering, and the reassurance of knowing that flats are virtually a thing of the past except for a side wall tear if one hits an object that causes this kind of damage, I am sold on these Fusion 2 Tubeless tires.
