Need a new chain?
Is your chain worn out? If you even have to think about it, the answer is probably "Yes". Component manufacturers advise a new chain for every 1,000 miles of riding. That equates to every 4-6 weeks for avid riders. Modern 9/10/11 speed drivetrains are engineered with extremely precise tolerances, when a chain is worn it no longer falls within these tolerances. The worn chain then creates undue wear on the cassette, and in the worst case scenarios, the front chain rings.
Some riders may scoff at this 1,000 mile advice, claiming it is simply a ploy by manufacturers to sell more chains. Heck, many of us have pushed our chains well past that mark. But when it comes time to replace that chain, there is that nervous feeling as we install the new chain, anxious to see if our negligence has killed our cassette. A chain checker will let you know when it is really time.
In the end, it's like changing the oil in your car. While you can get by without doing it. Don't be surprised when the next bill from the mechanic looks a little bigger than you expected. Cassettes are not getting any cheaper. If the damage is already done, start fresh, pick up a chain checker and introduce chain replacement to your maintenance calendar.
